Boston Celtics-Jakob Poeltl trade rumors, and figuring out starting lineups

The Boston Celtics have been linked to San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl, supposedly expressing significant interest in a trade, but are they really, or are they just being used to pump up the price again? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm get into the trade rumor and why it probably doesn’t make sense for the Celtics to pursue Poeltl. Then they get into the discussion of Robert Williams, and who might be the four around him if he’s moved into the starting 5.

  1. I'm going to take a random wild guess, if we make a move, we are getting Rui Hachimura.

  2. I wouldn't go for Poetl. He'll cost too much of the Celtics. I actually like Zach Collins better. He's finally healthy and is definitely more versatile. But the players I love for the Celtics are Wendell Carter Jr. or Naz Reid. Much better players and cost.

  3. Starting or not White is gonna get his minutes, and he's not one to complain about starting or not starting. This just means we get less smaller lineups, less luke and less hauser.

    Rob 30 Al 18
    Al 12 Grant 24 Tatum 12
    Tatum 24 Brown 24
    Brown 12 White 10 Brogdon 26
    Smart 32 White 16

Maybe something like that for the playoffs, adjusted depending on circumstances and matchups. Maybe even less minutes for grant with more for Al/Rob or brogdon.

  4. I wouldn’t mess up the chemistry personally unless we could get JP for picks and say one decent player. But I doubt the Spurs will move him. They’d love to team with him up with Wemby and have another Duncan/Admiral sitch.

  5. From a purely on-court perspective I think Poeltl is a pretty severely underrated player who can be as impactful as Rob when everything is clicking + all the theoretical benefits that you guys mentioned. I get that the trade rumors probably smoke and wouldn’t work logistically but I think he’s worth more than $15m a year

  6. We'd be worried about Giannis & Embiid. However, 3 month loan for Poeltl doesn't seem great when you already have Griffin who has shown he can defend at that level.

  7. Keep Killin it John. I am okay with getting Jacob. I like the idea of depth I also want a back up wing too. Maybe from the buy out market

  8. I like poetl but i wouldnt want to trade any of our top 10 for him nor gallo so i'd pass. He's just a rental.

I'd actually limit the celtics trade targets to who can fit into the TPE like naz reid, jarred vanderbilt or kenrich williams.

The typical trade package i'd use this trade season is TPE + jackson + picks. I'd only consider adding gallo, kornet or hauser if its a significant upgrade. I wouldnt mind getting a rental with that package too.

  9. Since the offseason, the only 2 players I was interested in adding to this team was Brogdon and Poeltl
