Dirk and Nash held it down for us. Now we have Luka and Wood

Someone clone Dirk’s younger version quick

Luka and Hardaway not being able to hit shit at the line is pretty crippling.

I don’t know if anyone can find this statistic, but I swear this team is shooting under 30% on technical free throws alone

I’ve come to accept the fact that Luka will likely never be an 80%+ FT shooter.

  5. the free throw shooting will never improve as long as luka is an average free throw shooter. if you want to drive yourself crazy about it, that’s up to you. i dont think the bucks, grizzlies, and nuggets, all teams who shoot as bad as dallas on free throws this year, cry about their free throws. youre only worried about being a bad free throw shooting team if you are mediocre and need every possible point to squeak out every win. dallas should address their numerous other holes, then missing free throws will be irrelevant.

I’m dumb, how exactly should I be interpreting this chart? I’m confused about how the columns show a ranking.

Damn look at those Dirk and Nash seasons. #1 three years in a row.

I genuinely believe Luka will never win a ring bc he can’t even make 3/4 of his free throws

Wow, who would have thought that a core of undrafted, second round picks and negative assets would collectively not be very good at free throws or other NBA skills which make them one of the worst rosters in the league?

Mavs have a freethrow coach back then. His name was Gary Boren. Look him up. Del Harris loved him

Dam we are having a historically bad free throw season. At least for this franchise it seems.

Went from having best player as an elite ft shooter to best player being below average, this is mostly explained by Dirk being much better at the line than Luka.

This is overstating the issue somewhat.

We are currently shooting .742 as a team, 28th in the league, sure, and we’re doing so on big volume. Meanwhile, we’re attempting 26.4 attempts a game, 2nd in the league (and make 19.6). It sounds like a serious issue.

But the reality is that even if we shot significantly better and became a median free throw shooting team this season at .785, we make 20.7 free throws a game, which is a difference of about 1 point per game.

This is not nothing. It would probably raise our overall Net Rating from our current 15th to about 10th in the league. Also, when probability isn’t rolling our way, we almost certainly have lost a game here or there that we could win.

But overall, given how the percentages work, it shouldn’t overshadow the fact our team (Luka) is exceptional at forcing our way to the line. Luka’s improved ability to get to the line is probably a bigger story.
