Go to the actual article and read the blurb under the title…. It was kinda or arguably satire. Maybe satire is not the right word.

Edit: Here is the blurb I was talking about.

“Back when newspapers were more important institutions, they had general sports columnists who’d write scathing one-sided columns, devoid of any acknowledgement to the opposing argument. In that spirit, while I’m not a fan of the Derrick White trade, my actual opinions are more nuanced. I understand that it’s absurd to judge a trade less than 24 hours after it’s made. Regardless, I enjoyed writing this hit piece from the perspective of a blowhard writer (which, at times, I can be).”

For some reason I had watched the 2019 Team USA SHAMROCK SQUAD lose to France in the FIBA World Cup. I did the same w the Olympics. That was all it took for me to notice Derrick White is an impact stat demon. This is easy to say now but in the -‘22 season his shooting was weirdly bad, it’s usually not an exploitable weakness. This season it’s more obvious that Derrick White would play big minutes for 30 teams.

You get this strange sense of love for the players on Team USA, because you stop thinking like ‘oh Booker and Tatum are both demons’ you think like ‘I hope Booker or Tatum can get us 14 efficient points with Guerschon Yabusele on them.’ The USA teams are THAT disjoint compared to the countries that emphasize continuity more. Actually I thought only KD, Draymond, and Bam really stood out as world stage talents in the Olympics. It’s weird.

  9. If someone thought that was a mistake then, they’re a dumbass who doesn’t actually watch NBA basketball.

There were some games in December and January where DWhite had less than 10 points, and the game thread was like “I don’t see why we have White. He’s garbage.” Couldn’t be further from the truth.

First, let me say that I think White’s been great and I am happy with the trade.

But, outside of part of the Miami series – and I am getting ready to be blasted – he did mostly suck last year’s playoffs. If we pinpoint game 4 of the Finals (where we were leading with just a few minutes left in the game, poised to go up 3-1 in the series), White went 4-12 from the field with 1 rebound, 1 assist, and was a -19.

I know it’s not fair to base an entire trade on one game, but one of the main reasons we traded for White was to help lift us over the top. This year’s Derrick White has been everything we could have hoped for. Let’s hope he can redeem himself when it matters the most.

  22. What makes Neil Lyer qualified to say this, and why people care?

Last year I posted about “glass half full” about this time – I feel like all of the energy around the NBA mirrors social media: unintelligent; short-sighted; immersive; of questionable use.

From the GDT’s to ESPN’s spewing heads, to r/nba to Twitter, anything with a horizon past 72 hours (ahead or behind) is deemed somehow insignificant.

There really is only one timeline: June.

Hauser is going to have bad months. Excellent players can have down shooting years. Players can develop – or regress. But not in 2 weeks.

White is a tremendous roster piece. Ainge and Stevens both deserve enormous credit for the roster work they’ve done over the past 15 years. Yes, 15. This franchise’s last 15 years compare well to anyone’s.

Next week, after White bricks a few 3’s and the GDT is full of ‘hE SucKS nOW’ I will still be glad he’s on our team.
