Will James Wiseman Start Next To Rookie Jalen Duren For The Detroit Pistons?

After the trade nearly was rescinded due to a failed physical by Gary Payton II, the Detroit Pistons trade for James Wiseman is official. According to Marc J. Spears, the Pistons plan on starting Wiseman next to Jalen Duren. How can they fit together, what can Wiseman help the Pistons improve on, and more on the addition of Wiseman.

  1. 1st Listen. What's good Ku. Enjoy the show as always. Looking forward to seeing where we go from here. At this point, only wins can get me excited. Can't wait to see Cade and Ivey play together. Duren is the real deal. Be good brother. Word up!!

  2. "the trade has officially went through"… You don't have to use perfect English all the time, but damn… At least put in some effort if you're going to be publicly speaking.

  3. I was high or low on the trade at first, but now that it’s official, I’m looking forward to seeing if Wiseman develops

  4. If Wiseman could develop his outside game, we might something here. Also be a better defender.

I feel like that has been said about some other players on this roster.
Which doesn't give me any confidence.

The bright spot being that he didn't fit the system of the Warriors, he fits better with us. Gives us another big that can work pnr. He is a better target and I feel he will work great with Ivey and Killian. I think Stew and Bagley can be the front court for the bench. Cade/Ivey working pnr with Wiseman and Duren is a plus in my head.

  5. Imagine ANY other player play as bad as Killian, you would be paying for billboards across the city to trade him. Man hes bad.

  6. Killian Hayes struggles when he thinks too much, he feels the pressure. Our hope relies on that mental, he has the capabilities for 12p 8a bench numbers. If you watch him concertedly, it is apparent. What worries us Killian believers is both can he mentally stay relaxed, and also can he cohesively perform in bench and starter minutes. Its a tough ask, but I like Killian Hayes' game.

  7. I think Killian needs a fresh start elsewhere. Maybe Utah.

So what's the plan with MB3? I think Stew may be next to go.

  8. As a die hard Warriors fanatic, here is my analysis on Wise: As you said, he is a physical specimen. He has all the tools to be great – runs the floor like a gazelle, large catch radius as a vertical spacing lob threat, and great touch around the rim. His shooting stroke is more than adequate, especially for a big. He won’t be a high volume three point shooter, but he can probably average around one per game – more than respectable for a big.

Unfortunately, he has a lot of work to do on the defensive end. His pick and roll defense and rim protection are well below average. He has yet to show that he can block shots at a high rate, nor consistently alter shots at the rim. Players often score or draw fouls on Wise when he’s in the lineup – a big reason why the Warriors net rating is one of the worst when he’s on the floor. He doesn’t have the worst hands, but not the best either. He fumbles and drops passes in traffic a good amount of times.

However, I think Wise can definitely improve in these areas with more reps and experience. A lot of Warriors fans were very frustrated with Coach Kerr not ever giving him consistent PT – opting to play veteran role players with less upside instead.

Question for you: Is there any chance that Beef Stew starts at the 4 next to Wiseman instead of Duren?

  9. With playing Wiseman on Wed or not I think it depends on how much interaction he had with the team since being moved Thursday. I know the trade wasn't official until this evening but if they allowed him to be with the team he should play Wed. If he hasn't been privy to the playbook & DTD activities I'd leave it up to him on how they use him. While his playing or not has no barring on the standings I want him to feel included and valued just to help his mindset. He has experienced basically the same ridicule Killian has but instead of being called at bust at 7 he was the 2nd pick on a Championship caliber franchise, he needs to find a new head space so he can regain confidence.

I would love to see him & Duren start the rest of the season together. If for no other reason to see what they can do with size. I am by no means saying I know Wiseman will work out but I think of you look at his 60 game sample size their is some promise. In the season he started 27 of 39 games he avg 21 mpg scoring 11.5 ppg with 6 boards & a block per game. Those aren't terrible numbers for a young front court player. Now in the season( current one) he has only played in 21 games he has had his min cut nearly in half causing his numbers drop accordingly. Worst case scenario is the front court is more athletic & longer as they continue to lose. Best case scenario is you find out if he has a future with the team in one role or another. Given his size & athleticism even if he is a career back up rotation player he still is a value for now. Plus if hell freezes over and the Pistons win the Lottery have Duren playing with another C sized player would help establish how to use him in the hypothetical situation where Victor is on the team. Duren might be a strictly 5 player where Wiseman & Victor may be better suited to play 4 when paired with him. That would be huge to find out going into the next season rather than needing to experiment with that for the first 25 games or so.

  10. Pistons moves this offseason:

    1. Trade Bagley, Hayes, Diallo and a 1st rd pick for Mikel Bridges and Edmond Sumner from the Nets!!
    2. Trade Bagley for Dorian Finny-Smith from the Nets!!
    3. Trade Hayes and a 2nd rd pick for Jared Vanderbilt and Dennis Schroeder from the Lakers!!
    4. Bring back GRANT!! He’s UFA.

Pistons need to make ONE of these 4 moves!!! I think 2 or 4 has the BEST chance of happening.

Our biggest concern is still WING DEFENSE!! It has to be addressed and not with ONLY a rookie!!

My main concern’s with Wisemen is health, mentality and if he’s willing to put in the work on the defensive end.

  11. If they start wiseman over duren I’m taking my pistons tattoos off with a angle grinder and buying courtside tickets to try to figh coach

  12. I think Wiseman will be more than adequate offensively. Hopefully his defensive awareness improves ! Looking forward to see what he can do.

  13. Bro I don’t think killian will be here next year. They aren’t gonna pay him bro. And killian doesn’t have that “dog” in him. Saddiq ain’t the only one Troy is getting rid of. He just had the most trade value. Doesn’t look good

  14. I think the pressure of playing in his home country got to him, he played poorly and it's got into his head. Hopefully this break helps his confidence.

  15. Only thing I worry about with a 2 big lineup is if there will be space for Ivey when hes driving into the lane, that congestion is what hurt him at Purdue way too much. Really hope Wise can keep that spacing as a 4.

  16. I said the minute I seen the trade that Wiseman would start next to Duren. Wiseman is a skilled big who's game, and size would compliment Duren greatly.

  17. I'm a warriors fan and a big wise supporter. I'm glad to see him going to a team with a lot of developing young players. I'm excited to see what comes of what seems to be a great opportunity for wise and the Pistons….his pros and cons have been well described already but I wanted to add some more context. Imagine Jordan Poole being forced to fit into the role of GP2 and then he gets yanked for every mistake. This was basically the case for wise. The dubs just wanted him to be a younger Looney. So yes he needs improvement in the fundamentals of being a big man but a lot of his bad hands and off timing with rebounds just comes from his sheer excitement to prove himself. I think him not having to worry about getting shelved for setting a pick at imperfect angle will allow him to calm down and get a real feel for the game….him being a lob threat will force opponents to fight through picks instead of switching this should open up a lot space for Ivey/Cade to get easy floaters. Can't wait to see him play in Detroit.

  18. I dig the new background Ku! That wire that was hanging down from the neon used to erk me hey 😂

  19. The lottery picks that Weaver is snatching up is mind boggling! I hope it all works out for us in the end.

Lifetime Golden State Warriors fan here-been a fan from 1973-before the dynasty so you know I've seen a thing or two with this franchise. I've never pulled harder for a young draft pick more than by James Wiseman-a really good young dude who didn't deserve some of the stuff he's had to deal with. I will tell you that what he's always needed ALL THE TIME for the last 5 years was to JUST PLAY BASKETBALL. That's it. He hasn't really played basketball with players that are not beneath him in talent. He always looked lost on the floor in Golden State's system. They wanted him to be another Andrew Bogut, Zaza Pachulia, David West type and that NEVER was Wiseman. You can see the raw potential there but in order to get better-he needed to play basketball-somewhere. He missed an entire college career outside of 69 minutes of college ball in 3 games. He had COVID, he missed a few practices due to communication issues-and he tore his meniscus JUST when he was starting to look like something good in the 2020-21 season. He looked only OK in the G League as he is still so far behind on basic big man fundamentals-for some reason Penny Hardaway taught him to play like a guard on the offensive end. If you watch his tape this year-you'll see shorter offensive players just eat him alive in the paint-depressing and embarrassing. No one ever focused on that part of his game. He played with Precious Achiuwa at U of Memphis-you can see how good Precious was and it covered up the holes in Wiseman's extremely short college career. He never played in games in front of scouts preparing for the draft. The most damning thing for him with Golden State was that when he was in the game with Stephen Curry-it absolutely destroyed the productivity of Steph's minutes something fierce. He had the worst plus/minus in the league. All this said-he went to absolutely the wrong team to play for-a championship team that needs their big man to be a screen setter, rebounder, passer-someone who really knows the game. Not a budding physical freak with guard skills with a fantastic offensive touch around the basket. He just needs to play, and play a lot. I look forward to seeing him proceed along the way of his basketball career and I truly hope he has a fantastic set of seasons for Detroit! He deserves it-he's been through a rough start to his career and he's a sweet good guy down in his heart.

  21. If we start both Duden and Wisdmen, we need to start both Bojan snd Burks do we don’t have to depend on Wisemen hitting threes immediately.

  22. 7:27 I looked it up since I was curious…the average height of an NBA center is 6 feet 8.86 inches (205.4 centimeters) for the 2022-23 season. Stew is a hard working young player who will still get better. He is not as tall as some centers (and may be more suited to PF), but to call him "extremely undersized" is simply not accurate. I'm not saying he is Ben Wallace (who was in the 6'7" range) and I do agree with your overall point about the Pistons getting bigger, but lets not disrespect Stew by exaggerating his "shortcomings".

  23. Yea with Killian, seems like he gets in his own head maybe. I always thought he should try and drive to the basket alot more. He's big enough to absorb the contact. In the beginning it looked like he was always avoiding contact. Maybe he needs to start wearing a mouthpiece from here on out for his own psychy?

  24. Ku I am sending you a bill for the bet I lost taking the Eagles. I lost big time. I bet a 12 pack of my friend's favorite beer. You owe me $9.99 sir.

  25. I can't believe I'm going to say this but we need to snatch up Stanley Johnson. He has improved his shot in San Antonio and is only 26.👍

  26. Sup Ku! Honestly I’m just excited to see something new and different. Saddiq has lacked consistency though I love the guy. I’m sick of us being so undersized since Drummond left. That Cavs game was so brutal 🤦🏼‍♂️
