Pacers’ 2022-‘23 season was perfectly bad

The Indiana Pacers just wrapped up their third straight sub .500 season. They had only three such seasons the throughout the entire 2010s.

But this was about as good of a bad season as a team could have.

I’m leaning more into this. We let Haliburton have his breakout year instead of benching him to gain a couple spots in the lottery. But I value Haliburtons ceiling much more than the difference between 6 and 8th pick.

Haliburton compared us to the Grizzlies and I kinda see that. The Grizzlies could easily have been a Mavs team with one superstar and a bunch of nobodies. But their role players stepped up and a few of them are elite now. If Mathurin, Nesmith, Nembhard and the rest of them continue to grow I can see us in a similar situation to the Grizzlies soon.

As for the Buddy trade it’s a hard one. We will sorely miss his shooting but our young guys have to improve to be elite starters if we want to be competitive in the future. And he’s too good of a shooter to come off the bench, he deserves to start for a competitor imo. Whatever we do, it might be best to start looking for a 3 or 4 who can replace his shooting- maybe that’s Nesmith/Nwora or maybe it’s a combo of those guys and a 3&D PF.
